Es gibt sie auch in diesem Jahr wieder – die „4 barsrest Awards 2009“ Hier werden Meilensteine der internationalen Brassbandszene ins Rampenlicht und in verschiedenen Kategorien zur Wahl gestellt. Hallo BBOÖ Ich habe mir gerade euren Auftritt am EBBC in Ostende auf der DVD angesehen. Ich gratuliere euch zu der enormen Musikalität der Band. Auch eure Solisten der Band sind wirklich top und ihr spielt sehr, sehr schön. Bitte beachtet aber, dass nicht nur das zum Erfolg führt. Arbeitet weiter am Sound der Mittelstimmen (Horns, Euphs, Bari). Was im Vergleich zu anderen Bands extrem auffällt ist die zum Teil massiven Ungenauigkeit (rythmisch & methrisch). Es wurde keiner der grossen f-ff- Akkorde der ganzen Band genau angespielt.. (Spirit of Puccini) Allerdings ist der Unterhaltungswert sehr gross und das Stück ist sehr schön zum anhören.. Leider gewinnt man damit keinen Wettbewerb! Verlässt euch auf eure Stärken und arbeitet an den Schwächen. Ich freue mich auf Linz. :-) Viele Grüsse aus der Schweiz!

Hi Brassbändler! Ich habe euch nun das dritte mal bei der Championssection live erlebt ! Eurer Auftritt in Oostende und was ihr da präsentiert habt, ist ganz einfach Musik, die nicht nur viel Idealismus, Perfektion und Technik verlangt, sondern besonders das Selbstwahlstück war Musik die das Herz berührte! Und ich habe noch nie in dieser Szene erlebt, dass ein ganzer Konzertsaal mit Fachpublikum, so schnell, mit Tränen in den Augen aufstand und begeistert applaudierte.......ich auch.....! Laßt euch bitte in eurer Linie nicht beeinflußen, denn so seid ihr ein sehr, sehr gutes Aushängeschild für ganz Österreich!!!!!!!! Ich freue mich auf 2010 in Linz! Schlipf

Gruss Gott. I love who you are and what you do. The European Brass Band contest should be just that; European. Not judged just on how you sound in relation to the history of brass bands in the UK, but your musicianship and your ability to 'find the music' in any piece. Everything I have heard from your band has been exciting and intensely musical. British band diehards are right to be intimidated, as your sound and your style will figure largely in the future of brass bands. I thought Cory were worthy winners last week, but was sad to see you guys hard done by again. Keep it up! All the best for the future. Adam Arnold

Umgebung und bin jedesmal aufs Neue von eurem Können, eurer musikalischen Leidenschaft und Harmonie begeistert. Wie ist es in Ostende gelaufen? Finde dzt. noch keinen Eintrag in euren news. Der internationale Brassbandwettbewerb 2010 in Linz ist bereits ein Fixtermin für mich und meine Familie. Hello People of B.B. Osterreich, What a great performance at te Europeans again. It was incredible. So much quality playing and fantastic soloists. And also last years piece Titans Progress !!! Fantastic. Especially the soprano Cornet player. The adjudicators just want to hear a typical english brass sound; really disappointing. I wich you all the best. Go on like this. Europe (only the adjudicators don't) is enjoying your music.

Whatever the results are and in the future may be... you'll never become a great winning band if you haven't learn to lose. A band like OberÖsterreich, who actually hasn't prove anything yet and is a 'baby' in brassband-age terms, can NOT afford it to be so arrogant. Remember that you practically get your ticket to the EBBC as a gift, while bands in other countries (f.i. ENGLAND, Belgium, the Netherlands, ...) have to compete every year on a very high level. The bands who stay home in those countries are playing on a much higher level and at least 'real brassband', instead of you. So, indeed: stay away from the EBBC in Oostende! If you think you are such a great band, you don't need an affirmation from a jury on the EBBC. Bands with such a lack of respect and contempt against other bands and judges like David King and Jan Van der Roost doesn't belong on the European Brassband Championship and even in brassband playing at all.

Thank you for your performance in EBBC in Stavanger. I heard your performance live and it was great. With Cory and Grimethorpe, in my opinion, you have to be under the top 3 bands or in worst case under top 5. I could not understand the results, but i also think it depends on the typical english sound. Needs further discussion, if european brass band sound means english brass band sound or if there is enough tolerance for austrian sound. thank you for the music. regards Martin from Germany

I have not yet had the pleasure of hearing your band 'live', but only on dvd. Your performance of Titan's Progress at the European is simply stunning! Brass Band contests have always thrown up strange results so don't be dispirited. Brass Banding is all about making music - and you do so beautifully. A studio recording of Titan's Progress should be on your list of things to do please.

I read your letter regarding the EBBC and was shocked about your arrogance towards adjudicators(David King amongst other!) and other bands. The EBBC is a BRASSBAND contest, instead of being negatif about English and European brassband tradition, you'dd better try to be humble and learn from topbands like Grimethorpe,Cory,Willebroek. It's not because a part ot the audience liked your performance(I wasn't one of them!!), that it gives you the right to be so negatif!! You can be dissapointed, but with grace and respect fot the other competitors!

Ich kann euch nur zu eurem Brief gratulieren. Wies mein Bandkollege schon treffend beschrieb. Es kann nicht sein das Innovative Testpieces von der Jury am EBBC systematisch unterbewertet werden. Nichtsdestotrotz hoffe ich, dass ihr den verdienten Applaus des Publikums geschätzt habt. Auch wenns irgendwie blöd tönt, solche Momente vergisst man nie mehr, wie auch immer das Resultat ausgefallen ist. Nochmals, ich vetrete voll und ganz die Punkte, die sie in ihrem Brief geäussert haben. Trotzdem, wünsche weiterhin viel spass am musizieren. P-A Steiner (Perk. bb13)

Chers musiciens, Je voulais tout d'abord vous féliciter pour la brillante performance de Dreams lors du dernier championnat d'Europe des Brass Band à Stavanger: somptueux! Mais je tenais surtout à vous féliciter pour la pertinence de la lettre que vous avez fait parvenir au comité de l'European BB Association (publiée sur les site 4barsrest.com), et votre détermination à ne pas vous soumettre à d'obscures critiques non-justifiées sur votre performance. J'espère que vos arguments seront entendus et que le mouvement européen des Brass Bands en sortira grandi, car il perdrait énormément de richesse si des ensembles tels que le vôtre ne participaient plus à ce championnat. De plus, comme vous le dites , il est inacceptable que les pièces de compositeurs non-anglais soient systématiquement dévaluées et dépréciées par certains jurys ou organisateurs. Car il s'agit d'un moyen très efficace de faire évoluer continuellement le style Brass Band en qualité et en diversité. Il serait stupide de s'en priver!
